Today at the 2009 GamesCom Sony has finally confirmed a new version of the PlayStation 3 that’s lighter, consumes less electricity, and (most importantly) is cheaper, at a price of $299 US, (€299 in Europe and £249 in the UK). The new PlayStation 3 “Slim” will hit retail shelves September 1, 2009, and the current PS3 models will now have an additional $100 chopped off of their current price tags, meaning that now the 80GB PS3 will be $299 and the 160GB PS3 will be $399. The new device is approximately 1/3 the size of the original PS3, which means its about 33% smaller and lighter, and it uses around 34% less power. Like the later model PS3s, the Slim is not backwards compatible with PS2 games, but it comes loaded with a 120 GB hard drive, so you can fit quite the collection of older titles from PSN store right onto your system. The PS3 Slim also has a couple new upgrades including: now being able to eliminated the “Install Other OS” feature that was on the previous PS3 system. Also a new feature called Bravia Sync allows you to operate the XMB through your TV remote control by connecting the unit to a Sony Bravia TV through an HDMI cable, this means that when you turn your TV off, the PS3 will automatically turn off as well.

Several sites picked up on a report by Chinese-language site Economic Daily News (UDN.com) that Sony has signed manufacturing agreements with two Taiwanese-based companies, Foxconn and Pegatron, to build the new, slimmed-down version of the PlayStation 3 in July. Ars Technica’s source had no specific information on how much the consoles will cost or whether or not Sony will alter its SKU offerings. However, the source did say that Sony is currently in the process of flooding retail with the 160GB PS3 SKU, while at the same time limiting supply of the 80GB model. The source noted that most retailers have about a 60-day supply of the 80GB model left in stock. Rumors have also been going around lately that a new PS3 slim would also result in a price cut and that if a price cut was put into place by Sony, Microsoft would also lower the cost of the Xbox 360. Now will any of this come true? Who knows……

In advance of E3 next week, rumors continue to circulate around the possibility of a new PSP and a new, slimmer PS3. Here are the latest:

Ars Technica is reporting that the next-gen, UMD-free PSP Go! is “indeed real,” according to a “trusty inside source” and should be announced at E3.

The same Sony “mole” claims that the new PSP will be “lighter than its UMD-sporting predecessor, along with lower power consumption and possibly a lower price.”

The new PSP will be sold alongside the older version of the PSP (PSP-3000), according to the Ars report.

The alleged source says, “A good number of titles will be released with both retail releases and digital downloads, with some games like Unbound Saga forgoing a retail release altogether.”

As for the slimmed-down PS3, it, too, is real, according to the mole–but Sony won’t begin selling the new PS3 until stock dwindles on the PS3 currently on store shelves. The source is targeting August or September for possible launch dates.

There’s no word on if Sony plans to strip any features out of the alleged PS3 Slim or if it will cost less than the current model.

The mole claims that Sony isn’t expected to announce a price cut on the current PS3 to clear inventory, “but the possibility is certainly there.” (This obviously has the biggest no-duh quotient of any of the statements.)

That’s it. Nothing terribly exciting or new here, but it does make sense that Sony would wait to announce a new PS3 until it can clear inventory. Obviously, with all these rumors out there, it’s going to be harder to move units without some sort of price drop.

There have been rumors floating around for a while now that Sony will introduce either a price drop or a newly redesigned PS3. So far Sony has stated no plans for either. But images have surfaced from a Chinese website that might prove otherwise. The images look to be from a factory where prototype casting is going on. Chances are, even if these images are of a real prototype casting, that it won’t even be the final design.

The casting seems to do away with the Spider-Man 3 font and is resorting back to the short form of “PS3″ just like its predecessors had. It also seems there is no memory card bay like the earlier PlayStation 3s had.
