Sony today announced at the Tokyo Game Show that PS3 gamers will get to waggle in the Spring of 2010.

Sony describes the Motion Controller much like the Wii Remote – but it is far more accurate: “The newly announced Motion Controller is equipped with two motion sensors, three axes gyroscope and three axes accelerometer that can detect the controller’s angle and movement held in the user’s hand.”

Besides just being an accurate game ‘wand’, Sony is pushing it to be paired with the PlayStation Eye camera. “Together with the PlayStation Eye camera for PS3 which can accurately track the absolute position of the controller, the controller can detect the natural and intuitive movement of the hand and reflect the precise movement on to the game.”

Price hasn’t yet been determined, but Sony did reveal that there will be at least a dozen games supporting the peripheral next year. A few of them are:

Ape Escape

Echochrome 2

Eccentric Slider

Sing and Draw

Champions of Time

Motion Party

The Shoot

Tower

Sony also intends to retrofit existing games with support for the Motion Controller. Games confirmed for the upgrade, which hopefully will be free, are:

PAIN

Flower

Hustle Kings

High Velocity Bowling

EyePet

Sony just announced new motion controller for the PS3. The prototype looks like a wand with a color-changing ball on top. It’s designed to work in conjunction with the PlayStation Eye, with the wand overlaid on-screen with a weapon or tool. Unlike Microsoft’s Project Natal, Sony says they’ve learned “some experiences need buttons,” which is why there’s still a controller involved. The system is said to be “sub-millimeter” precise, and it was demoed drawing and playing a shooter. It’s sort of the middle ground between Natal and Wii Motion Plus. Sony says it’ll launch in the spring of 2010, but we don’t know what pricing will be like yet.

Sony’s much rumored motion sensing controller for the Playstation 3 is real and it will likely be unveiled at E3.

That’s what I’ve been hearing from several sources, one of whom has seen the device and two of whom are familiar with Sony’s plans to show it at E3 next month.

Rumors that Sony will come out with a motion sensing device have abounded for over two years, ever since a patent was first reported on in January of 2007.

A good source saw a working prototype several months ago that largely fit what was in the patent. Sony’s controller apparently used LEDs (light emitting diodes, essentially little electric light sources) and a small webcam to track the device’s movements. Because the camera can read different color lights and the shape and angle of each light, it’s much more accurate than the Wii-mote. It can track precise movements, including along the Z axis (pushing toward and away from the TV; something the Wii is really bad at) as well as velocity.

As Kombo.com reported last month, Sony is apparently reaching out to select developers and publishers to get some early software coming.
